Before we begin, I must disclose to you, dear reader, that I have been tasked with a mission. A mission to eat dates. Six a day to be precise.
But I have yet another confession: I could care less for the taste of dates. Perhaps not as vehement as Ted Lasso’s distaste for tea, but close. I can’t quite get past the overly sweet and syrupy taste, combined with the sticky, chewy texture that gets stuck in my teeth.
I think I have found a solution to my predicament and I’m super excited to share my findings with you! This recipe is simple, delicious, and makes dates far more bearable for my sensitive palette.
Ingredients
- 1 bag of Earl Grey tea (I used Trader Joe’s brand)
- 2 bags of decaffeinated black tea bags (I used Trader Joe‘s brand) If you do not have a daily caffeine limit like I do, feel free to use regular black tea bags.
- 1 cup of boiling water
- 6 dried pitted dates (I just used the Great Value brand) Use more if you prefer more sweetness.
- 3 packets of stevia or your choice of sweetener.
- 1 cup of your choice of vegan milk. I used Silk Protein Cashew and Almond milk mixed with a bit of water because this formula is really thiccccc.
- Ice to preferred viscosity, I used about 1 cup. (Optional) Ice cubes can also be added after blending the dates if desired.
Instructions
Pour freshly boiled water over tea bags and allow to steep for about 5 minutes and allow to cool.
Add dates, vegan milk, sweetener packets, ice, and cooled tea to blender and blend thoroughly. Enjoy!
This drink really takes advantage of the flavor of dates and their natural sweetness as the flavor profile falls along side that of maple syrup or brown sugar. Brown sugar is the flagship flavor note of boba, so this is quite a satisfying yet healthy, higher fiber cousin to a boba milk tea!
