Review of Del Real Pork in Red Sauce Tamale

September 21, 2020

I purchased this little guy from the refrigerated section of my local 99 cent store for $1.49 because it looked like it would taste pretty good and the ingredients were simple.

I popped this in the microwave for 1 minute and offered it to my fiance to try. He said he’s not really a “tamale guy” and that his favorite part of all tamales, the meaty inside, is always so scarce and that the outside, the maiz, is dry and never tasty.

When eating it, he played some Mexican restaurant music and swears the tamale tasted better after.

I tried a little and it wasn’t bad, but given the visual red color and the ingredient list, I really expected a stronger flavor, but the flavor was quite dull and needed hot sauce or other flavor enhancer to taste satisfying.

The maiz was dry and crumbled a lot when we tried to scoop it onto a spoon. The macros are balanced: 10 grams of fat but only 4 grams are saturated, 18 grams of carbs (2 grams of which are fiber), and 9 grams of protein, 200 total calories.

Overall, I would not buy these again, but they’re really not bad. I think if we were both bigger tamale fans, this would be a fantastic quick meal.
